The Pareronia ceylonica is a butterfly found in South and South-east Asia. It belongs to the Pieridae family of butterflies characterised by mainly white or yellow colorations.
Butterflies are usually associated with rebirth and renewal, and in some cultures, they are seen as the living embodiment of a deceased individual’s soul.
However, folklore and superstitions surround the Pareronia ceylonica, associating the butterfly with the presence of the supernatural or evil. A common myth associates the sighting of this butterfly with the death of a family member before the next sunrise.
The Pareronia ceylonica is most commonly called The Dark Wanderer.
